CGW Workshop: Re-creating the Edwardian Silhouette - The Titanic Years
Saturday, March 17th, 2012, 11AM-2PM.
Sherman Oaks, CA
$

In celebration of the Titanic’s 100th sink-a-versary this year, Costumer’s Guild West is presenting a workshop on women’s style of the era, concentrating on the years 1910-1913. Slim was in, the S-bend was out. Poiret, hobble skirts, lampshade hats—it’s fashion! A lecture and accompanying clothing demonstrations will illustrate how to achieve this classic look yourself, from the underwear out. Both antique and reproduction garments will be displayed, and a supplemental booklet will be provided in class with links and sources. Where do I find shoes that will work? Are all the corsets underbust??! I can’t find any hats that look like that! DON’T PANIC—you can look Downton-Abbey-gorgeous with a little effort. Tips and tricks, facts and snacks. Sign up!

Tickets will be on sale from 2/24/12-3/1/12.

CGW Goes to Disneyland
Date TBD
$$$$

Last year we enjoyed a large turn out (35+). Each attendee received a reproduction ticket and map of the park from 1955. We rode as many rides as we could that were opened in 1955 and gathered for group pictures twice during the day, as well as a dinner outside the park.

If you are interested in a repeat performance, let Elizabeth McCash know! "If I don’t hear from you, this event doesn’t happen!!"

CGW Workshop: Amelia Bloomer, a Lost Pattern
Saturday, April 7th, 2012, Time TBD
Buena Park, CA 90620
$

In this lecture/slideshow, presented byVal LaBore, you will hear the story behind this one-of-a-kind pattern made
off a Bloomer-style gown, which is held by the San Diego Historical Society. The pattern was only partially completed, and was recently inherited by Val, who has been recreating the gown as closely as possible to the original. Hear the story of her research and see photos of the extant garment. These photos will not be available on the internet, at the request of the museum, and will only be seen during Val’s presentations. Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity!

Tickets will be sold from 3/23/12-3/30/2012.

FIDM Museum & Galleries

CGW Event: Private Tour of the Helen Larson Historical Fashion Collection at FIDM
Saturday, April 21st, 2012, 10AM- 12PM.
Los Angeles, CA
$$

Did we score or what? CGW Member Mela Hoyt-Heydon has arranged for us a private, curator-led tour of the Helen
Larson display room, as well as the back storage at the FIDM museum. I know, right? The secret room! That closed door has been driving me nuts for months, and now we have a chance to see what’s behind it without being arrested!

On top of that, their annual Oscars exhibit will be there (last day!!) I can hardly wait!! If you are not as excited as I am, read this description from curator, Kevin Jones:

“Gathered over a fifty-year period by well-known, Los Angeles-based historian Helen Larson, this collection helped to establish the academic study of fashion history. It was formed at the same time as the Doris Langley Moore Collection in Bath, England, and the Elizabeth Day McCormick Collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. This is the last collection of its kind still in private hands, and would be nearly impossible to duplicate in depth and breadth of objects. The acquisition of the approximately 1,000-piece Helen Larson Historic Fashion Collection will launch the FIDM Museum into the international realm of European fashion studies, particularly royal history.”

Tickets will be on sale from 4/2/12-4/9/12.
Price is $30 Members/ $40 Non-Members.

CGW Workshop: Edwardian Corset
Saturday, May 5th, 2012, time TBD
Location TBD, probably north Orange County
($ class fee, $$$$ materials fee/ kit)

Get expert assistance as you build an Edwardian corset, using the Truly Victorian 1903 Edwardian Corset pattern. From the maker: This corset pattern is based on the styles seen in 1903. It has the low, full bust and long hip needed to create the "pigeon breast" look that was popular from 1902 - 1909. The corset is available in three heights; high bust, medium bust, and low bust, and comes in bust sizes A-DD. The hip is in three lengths: long, medium, and short. Also included are patterns for a hip pad and bust forms, which are needed to help finish out thefigure. The instructions are for a single layer corset, which was the most typical of the period. This pattern is recommended for persons with previous corset making experience.

Tickets will be sold from 4/13/12-4/20/2012.
Class fee: $15 Members/ $25 Non-Members.
Required Materials fee : TBD

(We're working on a supply list/kit. Please e-mail events and let me know what you think should be included and what you would like to bring from your stash.)

Balmain, 1955

CGW Event: Strumpets in Stripes: A Naughty but Nice Tea
Sunday, May 20th, 2012, 3PM.
Pasadena, CA
($$$)

Any costume, any genre- but it has to feature stripes, and you have to look like a “strumpet”- however you define that (just keep it PG-13.)

Hostess Diane Yoshitomi gives shares this perspective: Just what is a strumpet? you ask. The word itself is an archaic one, meaning “a woman who sells her body for money.” Consult any dictionary or thesaurus and you will find a long list of synonyms and related terms, most of them very unflattering indeed. The worst ones apply to women on the lowest rungs of the socio-economic ladder, while gentler epithets attach to those on successively higher rungs. But what about the women who sleep their way to power or influence? Surely the mistress of a king or a robber baron is just as much a strumpet as the woman who stands on a street corner and demands cash in advance. Strictly speaking, it’s really just a matter of how tastefully and expensively a woman dresses herself.

Tickets will be sold from 5/4/2012-5/11/2012.
Prices TBD (approx $30/40)

Important Information regarding Costumer's Guild West, Inc. Events

  • I don’t understand what all these labels/categories mean: CGW coordinates four different types of activities: Events, Workshops, “Goes To” and Outreach.  An Event is planned by CGW Members, for the costuming community. A Workshop is a lecture/ demo/ presentation outside of Costume College, planned by CGW Members for the costuming community. A “Goes To” is a planned gathering of CGW Members at a non-CGW activity (such as a dance, movie showing or festival.) At an Outreach, CGW is assisting the costuming community or advertising our presence.
  •  Why do you sell tickets for some activities and not others?: For our Events and Workshops, CGW requires a ticket purchase both to hold your spot and to cover associated expenses. Although a “Goes To” outing or attendance at an Outreach may require a ticket/ badge purchase, these transactions are not handled by CGW.
  • I bought a ticket, and now I can’t attend. What do I do?: Tickets to CGW Events and Workshops are transferrable but not refundable. If you do find someone who can take your spot, or would like assistance finding a buyer for your ticket, please contact the Events Coordinator to make arrangements for transfer.
  • Can I bring my kid(s)?: That depends. Individual activities may have age restrictions, so make sure you read each description carefully. When in doubt, please ask!  All Costumer's Guild West, Inc. event attendees under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
  • How do I get a ticket?:  First of all, wait until they are on sale.  Requests made before the posted sales dates will not be accepted. Beginning at 12:01AM on the start date of ticket sales, you may request a reservation either by e-mail (to cgw.events@gmail.com) or by phone (by leaving a message at (424) 230-4850.) In your message, please include your name, the event you wish to purchase tickets for, the number of member and non-member tickets you wish to purchase, and the names of each attendee. Phone messages should also leave a contact number to confirm reservations. After receiving a confirmation e-mail/ phone call from us, you will be given directions for making payment via PayPal or by check.
